To launch our whole-school 'languages week', Jack and Monique Goate presented a traditional Romanian folk tale in Friday morning's assembly. Jack narrated the entire story in fluent Romanian, while his younger sister then retold the story in English. The story was a humorous tale about a simple man called Pacala, who was the target of many village jokes. He often misunderstood what was being said, or else took things literally. In this account, his older brothers had reminded Pacala to 'pull the door' behind him when he had finished his work in the house. Of course, he did just that! When asked to put the door down, he refused to do so, arguing that you never know when a door might come in handy.
