Aimee Collins, GB Athlete, inspires next generation of salem canoe athletes!

Aimee Collins, a talented paddler from Frome Canoe Club, recently visited our school to share her inspirational story with Year 5 and 6 pupils.
Aimee has been selected to represent Great Britain in the women’s single canoe class as part of the junior team. Her journey began when she started training with the club at the age of 10.
During her visit, Aimee showcased her canoeing gear and invited both students and teachers to try them out. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to experience the excitement of these water sports firsthand.
Aimee also took the time to answer questions and provided details on how pupils could get involved in the sport by joining Frome Canoe Club. Reflecting on her passion for canoe slalom, Aimee shared, “I have to thanks my sister for getting me into the sport. 4 years after I took up the sport, I started competing in canoe slalom. It’s a great sport because it’s both exhilarating and challenging. It’s also a solo sport so all my achievements and failures are down to me. It’s a relatively safe sport which has led to me meeting new friends and explore new places. I love it!”
Aimee’s dedication and hard work paid off when she competed on the Olympic white-water course at Lee Valley during the Easter Weekend in 2023, earning her place on the Great Britain junior team. She will be representing her country at the Junior European Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia in July, followed by the Junior World Championships in Krakow, Poland in August.
Frome Canoe Club, located in Market Yard in the heart of Frome, offers paddle sport activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding for individuals aged eight and above. Aimee’s success in a white-water sport is a testament to both her dedication and the club’s coaching prowess, despite having only a flat-water river in Frome.
